State of The Parks - February 2012

February 19, 2012
Whenever we go west through Texas we usually find ourselves on I-10. Fort Stockton is a nice halfway point between San Antonio and New Mexico. We have always stayed at the (ex) KOA in Fort Stockton. The last time we stayed there, we got the impression from them that they REALLY didn't care if we stayed there at all. So we voted with our wallet and found another park to stay in when traveling through. We landed at Hilltop RV Park just west of Fort Stockton. It is WAY better than the other offerings here and is a great place to overnite on I-10. However, after chatting with my neighbor who pulled in a short time after we did, I found that the park charged him $3 a night EXTRA for each child. Meaning that he paid $37 for an overnite site that I only paid $25 for the same thing. Personally I think that is a BAD policy. I understand the more people, the more water, power, sewer, etc. and it's reasonable to charge slightly more. But not 50% more. Especially since this park has NO child's amenities other than a pool. It caters mainly to short term and overniters. As it turns out, the neighbor I was chatting with is Chris Bearden and his wife Nancy who own an RV park in Idaho called Bear Den RV Resort. They know a thing or two about running a park and we had a nice long discussion about the "State of the Parks". Chris has invited us to stay at their park so hopefully in our travels this year we'll be stopping in and checking out their park. Looks very nice from looking at their website!
